A Reconfigurable USAR Robot Designed for Traversing Complex 3D Terrain

چکیده
The use of robotics in Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) is growing steadily from their initial inception during the 2001 World Trade Centre incident. These first USAR robots were adapted from robots intended for tasks such as duct inspection and bomb disposal and proved useful for exploring voids (spaces within the collapsed structure) deemed too dangerous or too small for either canine or human searching. Physically, the original designs consisted of a solid robot body with two tracks, one to each side, which utilized either fixed or variable geometries as per the specific robot. Despite years of progress, the core design of robots currently in use for USAR purposes has deviated little, favoring software/control development and optimization of the basic robot template to improve performance instead. Planning Stable and Efficient Paths for Articulated Mobile Robots On Challenging Terrains
An analytical strategy to generate stable paths for a reconfigurable vehicle while also meeting additional navigational objectives is herein proposed. The work is motivated by robots traversing over challenging terrains during search and rescue operations, such as those equipped with manipulator arms and/or flippers. The proposed solution looks at minimizing the length of the traversed path and...
متن کاملImplementation and Assembly of a Robotic Module for the MECABOT-3 Reconfigurable System
Autonomous operation of robotic systems in un-known environments is currently one of the most significant fields of study in mobile robotics, with numerous research groups worldwide determined on solving its various associated challenges. This paper describes the principal features of Mecabot, a modular robotic system capable of modifying its physical configuration according to the type of terr...
متن کاملOn The In-pipe Inspection Robots Traversing Through Elbows
A general robotic mechanism was presented for in-pipe inspection oflevel pipes with varied diameter or curved pipelines. The robot employed three legs comprised of parallelogram linkages mechanism which enables adapting to various elbow joints in the piping systems. The curvatures in pipeline are the most important constraints in front of the robot through navigation process. To study the adapt...
متن کاملRough Terrain Motion Planning for Actuated, Tracked Robots
Traversing challenging structures like boulders, rubble, stairs and steps, mobile robots need a special level of mobility. Robots with reconfigurable chassis are able to alter their configuration to overcome such structures. This paper presents a two-stage motion planning scheme for reconfigurable robots in rough terrain. First, we consider the robot’s operating limits rather than the complete ...
متن کاملInterface for Monitoring and Interacting with Multi-Terrain Robot Teams
Previous research on human-robot interfaces has been mainly concerned with interaction between one person and one robot or software agent. Yet, there are many scenarios in which multiple human-multiple robot interactions are possible, such as with teams of rescue robots, combat robot teams, or surveillance robots. Our work seeks to turn a fastpaced interactive multi-agent system (Gamebots) into...
